Julie’s Review of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner

bree tannerWhen I first heard that Stephenie Meyer was writing a new book for the Twilight Saga, I was ecstatic! I wanted to read more about the epic love story of Edward Cullen and Swan. When I found out Meyer's new book was a novella about the newborn vampire Bree from Eclipse, I was disappointed but still wanted to read it.

The book hit stores on Saturday, and I purchased a copy at Wal-Mart while out on an errand on Sunday afternoon. I brought it home, placed it on my nightstand, and planned on reading it Monday while relaxing by the pool.  My kids competed for my undivided attention at the pool and eventually won out over the book. (the book that I wasn't all that excited about reading in the first place)

After cooking supper, catching up on FaceBook, and doing a load of laundry, I finally decided to pick up The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner once again. It started out slow. I didn't really connect with the character. Meyers quickly introduced me to lots of other newborn vampires that I didn't really like. They weren't as intriguing and charismatic as the Cullens. They reminded me more of the TrueBlood vamps with their brutal, crude attacks on humans. When Bree met another newborn vampire Diego, I got hooked. Diego's character was fascinating in a way similar to Edward Cullen's appeal. I absolutely loved Bree and Diego's developing friendship. Victoria was referred to only as "she" or "her" by Riley. While Riley was only a minor character in Eclipse, Riley was a very important figure to Bree Tanner and the newborn army.

I read the entire book in one sitting! I absolutely loved it! It is a must-read and will sit proudly on my bookshelf with my Twilight collection. I highly recommend  it.

From now until July 5, you can read the entire book at www.breetanner.com . For each copy of the book purchased, $1 will be donated to the American Red Cross's Haiti Relief fund.
