The Story Behind the Cullens' Wardrobe

When you watch the second installment of the Twilight Saga, New Moon, pay special attention to the Cullens' wardrobe. Clothing items were carefully chosen by costume designer Tish Monaghan to reflect each character's back story. Those back stories will be revealed in third movie of the Twilight Saga, Eclipse.

New Moon director Chris Weitz thought that the pastel clothing worn by the Cullen family in Twilight made them stand out too much. He suggested that they be clothed in more contemporary colors in New Moon. Chris wanted to stay away from them looking as pastel as they did in the first film," Tish explained. “He thought they stood out too much. So he wanted them more of the world, but set apart within the color palette — so, just in cool colors.” In this picture, Alice (Ashley Greene) wore a rich blue dress by Rebecca Taylor and Rosalie (Nikki Reed) wore a midnight blue Eli Tahari designed gown.

To reflect the lives each Cullen lived before becoming vampires, wardrobe items were chosen that suited their pasts. Jackson Rathbone, a native Texan himself, suggested that his character Jasper always be shown wearing cowboy boots. We will find out in Eclipse that Jasper was a Texas soldier before becoming immortal. In the scene pictured at left, Jasper is outfitted in a gray John Varvatos sweater, a button-up Hugo Boss shirt, and J. Lindeberg jeans. Emmett Cullen, played by Kellan Lutz, is sporting a custom-made black vest, a dark gray Hugo boss shirt, Diesel jeans, and of course his Cullen Crest wrist cuff. Elizabeth Reaser, who portrays Cullen family matriarch Esme Cullen, looks lovely in a lilac dress from Club Monaco. Peter Facinellli's character Dr. Carlisle Cullen's look was inspired by actors Paul Newman and Robert Redford. “So he’s always dressed casual, yet put together," noted Tish.

You'll see lots more of the Cullens and their fashionable wardrobe in Eclipse, the third installment of the Twilight Saga, due out in theaters in June 2010.
